Skin Conditions – Blemishes, Acne & Problem Skin

Blemishes and acne are skin problems that begin when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores.

Blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads or pimples are all caused by the overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous gland.

This build-up of dead skin cells can make the skin appear uneven and dull due to blocked pore ducts. Whilst the temptation to exfoliate is excellent, this can aggravate the condition further if not done so properly.

Choosing the right facial product for individual skin types is also fundamental in controlling problem skin.

Product Considerations for Acne Prone Skin

Choosing the right facial product for individual skin types is also fundamental in controlling problem skin.

Acne and the stigma of ‘problem skin’ is usually prevalent in adolescence and at hormonal times of the month. Hormonal imbalances can prompt excess sebum production and therefore breakouts. Pathogenic bacteria within pores can add to sensitivity and inflammation of the area.

Poor diet, alcohol, wheat or dairy intolerance also affect the severity of breakouts. Prevalence of good fats within the diet and a healthy daily intake of water all help. Increasing free-flowing water in the epidermal layers is also crucial. Acne breakouts can also be an inflammatory stress response.

Acne Vulgaris is more often associated with younger skins and Acne Rosacea is more common in older skins. I see a lot of Rosacea-type symptoms in clients who have had a poor/no skin routine and have damaged their skin barrier functions. Rosy cheeks are not a sign of healthy skin. Both conditions can be very distressing, and clients experience a loss of confidence and often don’t know how to improve their situation.

Stress and emotional reactions are a big trigger or aggravator for these conditions and must be considered when working with you. Be open to how you can improve your own situation – it’s not just about products.

Acne Vulgaris – think about changing your pillowcase each day, wipe down your mobile phone with anti-bacteria wipes regularly, keep a food & sleep diary plus note down your feelings. Everyone is different and responds differently to situations.

Acne Rosacea – before your consultation, think about when it started, what makes it worse, have your tried anything before that has helped, when did it stop helping you? Symptoms include facial flushing, redness, broken capillaries, sensitivity, spots and thickening of the skin.

Triggers that can flare up this condition:-

• Deficiency of ‘good fats’ within the body weaken the barrier function of the skin making it difficult to eliminate the risk of infection.

• Lack of vitamins A and C can also serve to make the skin more sensitive and reactive especially to changes in climate, radiation and UV.

• Lifestyle factors such as poor choice of diet, inadequate self care regime, stress, alcohol, smoking, environment and underlying chronic medical conditions also contribute to unwanted flare ups.
